Care, research, teaching, prevention
Affiliated with Université de Montréal, the Montreal Heart Institute is an ultraspecialized hospital centre dedicated to care, research, teaching, prevention, rehabilitation and the assessment of new technologies in cardiology.
The MHI’s missions in action
To illustrate the missions of the Montreal Heart Institute in concrete terms, the Quebec mortality rate due to circulatory system diseases decreased from 450 to 150 for every 100,000 people between 1980 and 2005. This victory is a result of many factors related to investment in health care, and the MHI has played a key role thanks to its core missions.
Money invested in research has given rise to avenues for therapies that are less invasive and more effective. Funds invested in care led to a major decrease in hospitalizations in Quebec between 1995 and 2005 thanks to angioplasty procedures, defibrillator implantations, and heart failure medication.
In terms of prevention, heart disease and cardiac mortality have been slowed down thanks to awareness about healthy lifestyles and the treatment of cholesterol and hypertension. The teaching mission of the Montreal Heart Institute is to train a large number of specialists in Quebec and Canada and around the world.
